It’s a novelty to be given something as short as less then 14 minutes to review, and in the case of this 3 track CD from Oxford’s own stoners in residence Domes of Silence, an unexpected pleasure. The lead track is ‘Hunter S T’, as evinced by the excellent cartoon of the gonzo king himself on the CD, complete with iconic cigarette holder, hat and glasses. As befits the man himself, the track is a fuzz heavy psychedelic trip of a song, the drone and distortion being an excellent aural accompaniment to lava lamps and chemical relaxation, not of course that this review site would ever advocate such a thing.

‘EJM’ follows, upping the psychedilia index with heavy, low, repetitive bass and drums, layered with looping guitars. On top of this, vocalist Sean Parkin contributes Jim Morrison-esque lyrics with an added punk snarl. This taster for the band’s upcoming album rounds of with ‘Nightbus’, a simple, unpretentious number that sounds like it was inspired by the garage rock sounds of the likes of MC5 or The Stooges.

There really is a lot to like in ‘Hunter ST’, and if the album it precedes comes up to the same standard, it could well be a stoner classic.

‘Temple Of The Wasp’ is a short blast of hostile desert rock grooves, from the Oxford based band.

The singles title track with its driving bass and fuzzed out guitars, incorporates the best bits of Raw Power-era Stooges with a ferocious blend of heavy metal.

Sean Parkin’s vocal croon adds to the garage rock groove, and are very reminiscent of the daredevil vocals of Iggy Pop.

‘Bad Wisdom’, the second track on this release is a four minute blast of early pounding Queens Of The Stone Age distorted rock, backed by Fu Manchu’s energetic rhythm section. The track has its roots firmly planted in California’s Palm Desert.

Parkin’s passionate and now, instantly recognisable self-assured vocals, sprawl across the desert with self-vigour and commendable attitude: “I live with what I lust, I live with what I trust.”

Domes of Silence are an impressive ensemble, whose garage rock juggernaut is set to burn a hole through the deserts barren landscape.

I hate to say this but I think Domes Of Silence from the UK are one of the last great Stoner Rock/Metal bands, the genre has become very watered down and confused since the glory days of the early Kyuss and Fu Manchu albums. I mean what is Stoner Rock these days?, you tell me. Domes Of Silence have never recorded anything below a very good high standard, the band is very skilled musicians and they have always had a knack of producing great fuzzy rock that is also very infectious and that is what made the original Stoner/Desert Rock bands so great and so influential. This is their new 3 track EP titled "Hunter ST" which which is named after and about the author Hunter S. Thompson. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is one of my favorite books of all time so I automatically was intrigued by this release. The line-up of Sean Parkin (vocals), Charles Lane (bass), Alex Lane (drums)and guitarist's Carl Bickey and Richard Aitken play a fuzz out, slightly punky stripped down hard rock similar I guess you could say to Truckfighters and early Fu Manchu.

The title track and the first tune up is about as infectious as you can get within the genre these days, along with the great groove and hooks you also get the vocals of Sean Parkin which have a instant commercial appeal. Not that this is top 40 material but if the musical world wasn't so screwed up this could be a radio hit. Second track titled "EJM" is more varied with a slower, more melodic start before it builds into a energetic rocker before again getting more mellow before its conclusion. Expertly played with a vibe of a timeless rock song, its another winner. The final track here is another killer, called "Nightbus" it has a punk rock meets fuzz rock vibe with the meaty rhythm section pumping throughout. A great headbanging track that is again very infectious. After just 10 or so minutes, the EP is over and done with but it immediately demands a replay and you will get many spins out of this fine EP. The UK has really been serving up the goods in recent years in the Stoner, Doom Metal scenes but they also have a endless array of incredible Hard Rock bands and I think that is where Domes Of Silence fit in, they will get the "Stoner Rock" tag of course but then again, who doesn't these days. Another great release from them and in my opinion, one of the best groove based Hard Rock bands ever from the United Kingdom. Please give it a listen A.S.A.P. 9/10

Domes of Silence from Oxford, consist of: Sean Parkin (vocals), Charles Lane (bass), Alex Lane (drums) coupled with the twin guitars of Carl Bickey and Richard Aitken is the latest band on the UK hard rock scene to catch our attention here at Chybucca Sounds.

The five-piece play hard-fuzzed out rock, mixed in with a cocktail of 70’s punk. The bands first single ‘Hunter ST’ is named after (and is also about) the author Hunter S. Thompson. The track is a lesson in how to play fuzzed out groove rock with the right way.

Clocking in at just over four and a half minutes, vocalist Sean Parkin’s distinct Iggy Pop crossed with Morrissey-esque croon on lyrics such as: “When I’m down, I walk the line, Hunter Thompson in my mind” give the Domes their signature sound.

Guitarist’s Bickley and Aitken bring the solid, meaty riffs, while both Alax and Charles Lane hold the bands sound together with a tight rhythm section.

Domes of Silence, will ultimately be lumped into the ‘stoner rock’ area of the genre, however from the evidence of the bands first single, the Domes have to a lot more to offer the alternative rock scene, as well as the underground punk scene.

Recommended for fans of: Fu Manchu, Kyuss and Lowrider.
