Hunter ST EP REVIEWS

Domes of Silence are masters in writing catchy songs…The single starts with the catchy guitar riffs of the mid-tempo song ‘Hunter S. T.’. We know that Domes of Silence are fans of mescaline (named their full length album), Sean now reveals that he is a fan of Hunter S. Thompson: “When I’m down, I walk the line, Hunter Thompson in my mind”. Darker and more grim the second song ‘E. J. M.’ crawls out from the speaker boxes but with the same strong ingredients – Sean’s majestic voice, the precise drumming like a Swiss clockwork, the booming and ear-piercing bass lines and the heavy stoner guitar riffs with psychedelic and spacey excursions. In the end the third and fastest song ‘Nightbus’ with its infectious groove doesn’t let you sit still and asks you for the last dance. The song radiates charm with its snotty attitude and is the crowning finale. STONER ROCK.

What more can I say; for me a cracking introduction to a band that deserve to make big strides onwards and upwards this year. Throw in an element of The Doors in the vocal delivery and, to tie it off, for me the standout track ‘Night Bus’ which leans so heavily on Iggy and the Stooges it could have been written by the man himself, even though the opening riff has elements of both ‘Road Runner’ and ‘Suffragette City’ – respect!!!!
Domes of Silence consist of Sean Parkin (vocals), Charles Lane (bass), Alex Lane(drums) coupled with the twin guitars of Carl Bickey and Richard Aitken. They recorded the EP live, with very few overdubs, cut as simply as possible (easy to see where the power will come from live). For any stoner virgins out there, get into it and what better starting point can you ask for? UBER ROCK

This 5 piece band plays a psychedelic stoner style of rock with hints of punk…Vocalist Sean Parkin reminds me a bit of a harder Sounding Morrissey. The song is a bit mesmerizing. There’s also a level of fuzz involved to give the song a Truckfighters feel. The second song “EJM” is a bit slower and mellower at the start then speeds up. After the chorus it slows down again. Very cool song. The final song on the EP, “Nightbus,” has more of a punk feel to it yet still fuzzy at the same time. This song would be a great one to either start off a show or get an encore going. This song can make you bob your head as you walk down the street with the earbuds in. SODA SHOP

It’s a novelty to be given something as short as less then 14 minutes to review, and in the case of this 3 track CD from Oxford’s own stoners in residence Domes of Silence, an unexpected pleasure. The lead track is ‘Hunter S T’, as evinced by the excellent cartoon of the gonzo king himself on the CD, complete with iconic cigarette holder, hat and glasses. As befits the man himself, the track is a fuzz heavy psychedelic trip of a song, the drone and distortion being an excellent aural accompaniment to lava lamps and chemical relaxation, not of course that this review site would ever advocate such a thing.

‘EJM’ follows, upping the psychedilia index with heavy, low, repetitive bass and drums, layered with looping guitars. On top of this, vocalist Sean Parkin contributes Jim Morrison-esque lyrics with an added punk snarl. This taster for the band’s upcoming album rounds of with ‘Nightbus’, a simple, unpretentious number that sounds like it was inspired by the garage rock sounds of the likes of MC5 or The Stooges.

There really is a lot to like in ‘Hunter ST’, and if the album it precedes comes up to the same standard, it could well be a stoner classic.

‘Temple Of The Wasp’ is a short blast of hostile desert rock grooves, from the Oxford based band.

The singles title track with its driving bass and fuzzed out guitars, incorporates the best bits of Raw Power-era Stooges with a ferocious blend of heavy metal.

Sean Parkin’s vocal croon adds to the garage rock groove, and are very reminiscent of the daredevil vocals of Iggy Pop.

‘Bad Wisdom’, the second track on this release is a four minute blast of early pounding Queens Of The Stone Age distorted rock, backed by Fu Manchu’s energetic rhythm section. The track has its roots firmly planted in California’s Palm Desert.

Parkin’s passionate and now, instantly recognisable self-assured vocals, sprawl across the desert with self-vigour and commendable attitude: “I live with what I lust, I live with what I trust.”

Domes of Silence are an impressive ensemble, whose garage rock juggernaut is set to burn a hole through the deserts barren landscape.

I hate to say this but I think Domes Of Silence from the UK are one of the last great Stoner Rock/Metal bands, the genre has become very watered down and confused since the glory days of the early Kyuss and Fu Manchu albums. I mean what is Stoner Rock these days?, you tell me. Domes Of Silence have never recorded anything below a very good high standard, the band is very skilled musicians and they have always had a knack of producing great fuzzy rock that is also very infectious and that is what made the original Stoner/Desert Rock bands so great and so influential. This is their new 3 track EP titled "Hunter ST" which which is named after and about the author Hunter S. Thompson. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is one of my favorite books of all time so I automatically was intrigued by this release. The line-up of Sean Parkin (vocals), Charles Lane (bass), Alex Lane (drums)and guitarist's Carl Bickey and Richard Aitken play a fuzz out, slightly punky stripped down hard rock similar I guess you could say to Truckfighters and early Fu Manchu.

The title track and the first tune up is about as infectious as you can get within the genre these days, along with the great groove and hooks you also get the vocals of Sean Parkin which have a instant commercial appeal. Not that this is top 40 material but if the musical world wasn't so screwed up this could be a radio hit. Second track titled "EJM" is more varied with a slower, more melodic start before it builds into a energetic rocker before again getting more mellow before its conclusion. Expertly played with a vibe of a timeless rock song, its another winner. The final track here is another killer, called "Nightbus" it has a punk rock meets fuzz rock vibe with the meaty rhythm section pumping throughout. A great headbanging track that is again very infectious. After just 10 or so minutes, the EP is over and done with but it immediately demands a replay and you will get many spins out of this fine EP. The UK has really been serving up the goods in recent years in the Stoner, Doom Metal scenes but they also have a endless array of incredible Hard Rock bands and I think that is where Domes Of Silence fit in, they will get the "Stoner Rock" tag of course but then again, who doesn't these days. Another great release from them and in my opinion, one of the best groove based Hard Rock bands ever from the United Kingdom. Please give it a listen A.S.A.P. 9/10

Domes of Silence from Oxford, consist of: Sean Parkin (vocals), Charles Lane (bass), Alex Lane (drums) coupled with the twin guitars of Carl Bickey and Richard Aitken is the latest band on the UK hard rock scene to catch our attention here at Chybucca Sounds.

The five-piece play hard-fuzzed out rock, mixed in with a cocktail of 70’s punk. The bands first single ‘Hunter ST’ is named after (and is also about) the author Hunter S. Thompson. The track is a lesson in how to play fuzzed out groove rock with the right way.

Clocking in at just over four and a half minutes, vocalist Sean Parkin’s distinct Iggy Pop crossed with Morrissey-esque croon on lyrics such as: “When I’m down, I walk the line, Hunter Thompson in my mind” give the Domes their signature sound.

Guitarist’s Bickley and Aitken bring the solid, meaty riffs, while both Alax and Charles Lane hold the bands sound together with a tight rhythm section.

Domes of Silence, will ultimately be lumped into the ‘stoner rock’ area of the genre, however from the evidence of the bands first single, the Domes have to a lot more to offer the alternative rock scene, as well as the underground punk scene.

Recommended for fans of: Fu Manchu, Kyuss and Lowrider.

The next album I’m reviewing here is self titled by the UK band, Domes of Silence. This (number) piece band plays a psychedelic stoner style of rock with hints of punk. The first song is a song that would have gone great on the “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” soundtrack. The name of the song is “Hunter ST” which is named after and about the author Hunter S. Short but sweet. Although Temple Of The Wasp is certainly a very short single released by Domes Of Silence, the music is more than enough to get excited about. This United Kingdom five piece take the best of groove rock and old school heavy metal and put it together for quite a ride. The single "Temple Of The Wasp" features plenty of catchy riffs and a very blues laden solo. The drums are laid back and rhythmic, but aren't lazy. The bass is cranked way up in that garage fuzz style, but it just adds to the groove haze tha surrounds the music. Vocals are a cross between Ozzy Osbourne and Glen Danzig, and even the music at times sounds like they borrowed a riff or two from them. "Bad Wisdom" features a bit more distortion and buzzing guitar work that bring to mind the music of Queens Of The Stone Age. This is certainly a hell of a blues rock track and extremely energetic.

If Temple Of The Wasp is just the beginning, then the full album should be pretty exciting. There doesn't seem to much filler here with what the band can accomplish. Hopefully listeners will see more rock n' punk blues from these guys very soon.

There's one word always hits me every time I listen to the ‘Domes, whether that be live in a sweatbox pub or moping around in the drizzle with my headphones, "textbook". Their enviable habit of hitting the stoner-rock cactus thorn on the head reigns supreme again here on this CD/download single which serves as a tasty titbit to hook in gaping-mouthed, head-nodding listeners for their soon-to-be-released debut album.

Domes' direct, yet oh-so warm and cuddly, take on fuzz-ed up hard rock continues to act as a vehicle on the title track for Sean Parkin's gruff, authoritarian musings on the quirky late journalist and author, Hunter S Thompson. Backed by a meaty bout of solid riffage, with a tone at times reminiscent of Kyuss' "Hurricane", Sean's high position in the mix gives excellent weight to the rock n' roll story element of this groover; a must-hear for fans of Truckfighters and Dozer. "EJM" continues the dictionary definition desert worship with its slowly building drum-heavy intro opening up into a riff a little more reminiscent of bands from the heavy grunge era, like Primal Scream and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Guitarists Carl Bickley and Richard Aitken quickly lock into a chug tighter than vacuum-packed plastic with Charles Lane on bass and remain as one unit throughout, with Sean's slower, more calculated throaty tones supervising a darker lyrical theme. "Nightbus" is a chirpier number, lyrically about, well, errrr… shitty dickheads on buses! Judging by the giggling backing vocals towards the conclusion of the last track, I'd say this is definitely a band who've found their sound well and are just as happy rocking away to themes as diverse as ‘Gonzo journalism' and pissed-up nob-jockeys!

Overall, this is a very solid effort from one of the purest-sounding bands on the circuit, and even comes complete with the colourful and retro pencil-strokes of acclaimed scene artist Michael Cowell. It's already a hot summer, so light the BBQ, chill the beers and stick this through your garden-speakers while you wait for the full album!

Stoner rock definitely, reminded me in parts of the seminal Masters Of Reality album. Throw in an element of The Doors in the vocal delivery and, to tie it off, for me the standout track 'Night Bus' which leans so heavily on Iggy and the Stooges it could have been written by the man himself, even though the opening riff has elements of both 'Road Runner' and 'Suffragette City' - respect!!!!

This EP is the precursor for a mini LP due this year. Out of interest they are playing in the Wheat Sheaf in Oxford in September 2010, well worth a look.

Domes Of Silence 'Hunter ST' EP 2010

When I first encountered Domes Of Silence live a couple of years ago I was immediately struck by their marriage of fuzzy stoner guitars with some mesmeric, almost baggy like grooves. It was almost as if someone like the Stone Roses or Primal Scream had been pumped full of Kyuss. I made a mental note then to keep an eye on them.

So here we are two years down the line and with one line-up change, serious illness and a previous digitally released EP, the awesome "Temple of the Wasp" under their belts Domes of Silence hit us with their latest and greatest piece of aural candy.

Since that first fateful encounter the band have toughened up their sound and now deliver a tighter, leaner mix of razor sharp fuzzed out guitars and concise song writing. Lead off track "Hunter ST", a tribute to the great Hunter S Thompson if you hadn't figured that out, is by far the finest tune I have heard so far from these guys as it drives along on a cheeky verse that simply explodes into a massive chorus. Previously I have described vocalist Sean as sounding like the love child of Iggy Pop and Jim Morrison as he delivers a most un stoner like croon. Those elements are still in place but there's also something new here in his deliberately enunciated style that brings to mind Justin Sullivan from New Model Army. Whatever Sean is doing and whoever his influences may be it's working as this is easily the most confident and strident vocal performance from him yet.

Things get a little darker on the second track "EJM". The tune is propelled along on a rolling cavalcade of tribal drumming and features a much sparser guitar arrangement than its predecessor. Not as immediate or catchy as the title track but if this was the only thing you'd ever heard by these guys it would still be head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. This drive-by-rocking of an EP is finished off with the killer blow of "Night Bus". This shows the more visceral side of the band and possibly betrays some punk roots in their collective psyche as Sean delivers the track with a sardonic snarl.

Domes of Silence still claim allegiance to the stoner flag and, yes, the big assed guitars and fuck off grooves do plant a size nine boot firmly in that camp and tip a nod to bands such as Fu Manchu…etc but on this evidence there is a whole lot more that this band has to offer that the restraints of the stoner scene won't be able to contain. This is simply a dazzling display of muscular heavy alternative rock that actually puts many so called stoner bands to shame. If Queens of the Stone Age grew some fucking gonads and stopped letting the ginger whiner sing they may possibly be able to dream of being Domes of Silence!!!

The brand new single ‘Hunter S. T.’ from Domes of Silence sees the light of day, a tastemaker for a mini album later in the year. And what can I say, Domes of Silence are masters in writing catchy songs. This is nothing new since their previous single 'Temple of the Wasp' had the same qualities. But please note the new single 'Hunter S. T.' has got more to offer. The sound is brilliant and the music is perfectly balanced between heavy, fuzzy stoner rock and psychedelic garage rock. The rhythm pounds like an old steam-engine and the guitar riffs are sharp like razor blades. The Oxford based five-piece band Domes of Silence releases an energy like a hydroelectric power station - multiple Gigawatts. And the best of the lot is Sean's very powerful and passionate voice, which is fragile and vulnerable at the same time, towers over all. Sean queues into the list of great rock singers like Rob Younger (Radio Birdman), Kim Salmon (The Scientists) and Iggy Pop (The Stooges).

Thompson: "When I'm down, I walk the line, Hunter Thompson in my mind". Darker and more grim the second song 'E. J. M.' crawls out from the speaker boxes but with the same strong ingredients - Sean's majestic voice, the precise drumming like a Swiss clockwork, the booming and ear-piercing bass lines and the heavy stoner guitar riffs with psychedelic and spacey excursions. In the end the third and fastest song 'Nightbus' with its infectious groove doesn’t let you sit still and asks you for the last dance. The song radiates charm with its snotty attitude and is the crowning finale. The cover art is supplied by stoner scene artist Michael Cowell.

On April 10th and 11th they will be hosting the inaugural Loud Howls Festival at The Gaff, Holloway Road, London. This two day event is set to showcase the finest in underground stoner/doom/sludge/psych and classic rock.

The Saturday will be mainly given over to stoner/psych and classic rock and will be headlined by Sun Gods In Exile from Portland, Maine whose debut album was released to rave reviews last year on Small Stone Records. Also appearing on the Saturday will be dirty rock and rollers Grifter, offbeat grunge stoners End of Level Boss, psychedelic blues doomsters Alunah, desert rockers Domes of Silence, Welsh stoners Suns of Thunder, experimental instrumentalists Bodukwe, psych jammers Stubb, trippy doom from Obiat and full throttle stoner from Dusteroid.

Saturday will also feature a surprise after show performance that is shrouded in secrecy!!!

Sunday is mostly given to Sludge and doom and will be headlined by Stoke noise merchants Charger. Also appearing will be true doom from Witchsorrow and Serpent Venom, sludgey doom blues from Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knight, nasty sludge from Koresh, Dead Existence, Berserkowitz and Dopefight, psychedelic noise from Astrohenge, angular post metal from Gorse and wizard obsessed stoner thrash from Invasion.

Orange Goblin will also be providing their highly entertaining metal disco skills across the weekend!!!

Its been a long time since their acclaimed first album "Mescaline" was released but considering the serious health issues vocalist Sean Parkin has been battling with, its more than understandable. I hope he pulls through real soon and get back to doing full time what he has a natural talent for which is making head-stomping Stoner Hard Rock music. In the years the band has been together they have been through more than the average band, personal conflicts, serious health problems, addiction and multiple line-up changes but they are back with a new single "Temple Of The Wasp" and they are sounding better than ever. The song is a real groove based stomper which is part Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Atomic Bitchwax and Clutch all given the Domes Of Silence very tight, polished treatment and this band is real tight indeed. The track is catchy, infectious with more groove than just about any band in the genre can muster. The laid back vocal approach adds balance to the fuzzy guitar riffing and dynamic but subtle solo work. The drumming is steady, solid and even has a little cow-bell. The lyrics are excellent as is to be expected from this band, well-thought out and entertaining. The band has a delivery that is hard to ignore, you don't hear to many bands that have this much finesse. The track is in and out in little over three minutes and instantly has you hitting repeat, a great tune. The other track is a the live favorite "Bad Wisdom" and it kicks ass but has a different groove than the first track. It has a more of a 70's "Iggy And The Stooges Raw Power" groove going on with a energetic, more eclectic sound. Once again, the delivery of vocals and shredding pure rock riffing is so in tune with each other, it is a instant keeper even though it has such a Classic Rock you may think you have heard it before somewhere. The production sheen is outstanding and has a slightly more heavier sound than the debut album did. You can call it Stoner, Sludge, Punk Rock, Psyche or give it any tag you want but this is just Rock Music the way it was meant to be played, with groove, passion, feeling and energy. Check it out. 10/10

On the opposite side of the scale of hardness is England’s Domes of Silence. Their new single Temple Of The Wasp is pretty straight forward stoner rock influenced metal. Slow n low guitar grooves with a stomping rhythm section brings to mindClutch, Mountain and Fu Manchu. The info sheet that came with the single says that they use Matamp amplifiers. These loud muthers are difficult to tame in the studio so make sure you check these guys out live where I’m sure they pump them through enormous speaker cabinets.

The British Domes Of Silence previously released their full-length ‘Mescaline’, and since then struggled with line-up changes, addiction and illness. As a definitive sign of new found vitality the band released a 2-track demo, ‘Temple Of The Wasp’.

The title-track gives a great image of the way the band is heading and proves to be a damned catchy tune. Clocking in just under three and a half minutes it combines a great swing (with cowbell!) with a vulgar-sounding, retro guitarsound. The vocals are not exactly powerful, but that only adds to the space-ness of Domes of Silence. B-side ‘Bad Wisdom’ is said to be the bands live-favourite, but is doomed to be quickly replaced by ‘Temple Of The Wasp’!

'Temple Of The Wasp' is a short and sweet little blast from UK based Domes Of Silence. Available in a variety of download only formats, this is pretty good lo-fi fayre.

Ploughing a furrow much akin to Pissed Jeans and Girls Against Boys, there is a lot to like in the simplicity of 'Temple Of The Wasp' and supporting track, the live favourite 'Bad Wisdom.'

Driving bass and fuzzed-out guitars are the mainstay of the Domes sound with Sean Parkin's almost Elvis-like croon complimenting the sound well. Give it a spin and support a real DIY release.

Tenacity, determination, bloody mindedness and talent...Domes of Silence have it all by the truckload. Since their debut album "Mescaline" emerged in 2004 on the Shifty Disco label the band, led by the singular vision of frontman Sean Parkin have battled stylistic changes, multiple line-ups and serious illness and still they forge forward with gritted teeth and bloody knuckles.

Taking matters into their own hands Domes of Silence have decided to release this two track masterpiece themselves via itunes and in doing so are possibly showing the rest of us what we should be doing. Lead off track "Temple of the Wasp" is a fine slice of fuzzed up desert rock...the guitars have more beef than a butcher's bin and the rhythm section drives this home like a Mazeratti!!! While the music tips its greasy trucker cap to Queens of the Stone Age, albeit with more piss and vinegar, Sean's vocals contrast perfectly with a bellicose croon that brings to mind Jim Morrison, Iggy Pop and The fall's Mark E Smith. Restrained yet with enough of a bile ridden edge the vocals may be an acquired taste but this is really what sets these guys apart from the pack and after a couple of listens you couldn't imagine it any other way.

Track two "Bad Wisdom" takes a deep snort of espresso and steps on the gas to prove why this tune has become a live favourite for the band. Another simple yet highly effective riff backs up Parkin's gritted teeth vocals while the drums threaten to punch through the snare skin. The cheeky guitar motif that repeats in the background of the song is like an aural dose of heroin!!! That little bastard will be echoing round your head for days.

I understand an album is in the bag but as yet there are no firm plans to release it...hopefully soon. In the meantime download this little sucker...and if you don't have an MP3 player to listen to it on then go and get one, even if these are the only two songs on it it'll be worth the money.
